Sustainable Living
"Oh Great Spirit, let your voice whisper righteousness in our ears through the East Wind at the break of day. Let us be blessed with love for all our brothers and sisters on the Earth so we may truly live in peace. Let us have good health mentally and physically to solve our problems and accomplish something for future generations. Let us be sincere to ourselves and make the world a better place to live. Aho Mitakuye Oyasin."
~ Lakota Prayer
"Here is a river flowing now very fast. It is so great and swift, that there are those who will be afraid, who will try to hold on to the shore, they are being torn apart and will suffer greatly. Know that the river has its destination. The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off into the middle of the river, and keep our heads above water. And I say see who is there with you and celebrate. At this time in history we are to take nothing personally, least of all ourselves, for the moment we do, our spiritual growth and journey come to a halt. The time of the lone wolf is over. Gather yourselves. Banish the word struggle from your attitude and vocabulary. All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration. For WE are the ones WE have been waiting for."
~ Prophecy of the Hopi Elders
On all retreats and workshops, we learn to live more sustainably, communally, and try to lighten our footprints on the Earth. We use resources as sparingly as possible. We refrain from using disposable napkins, paper towels and dishware. We compost, and recycle our water as much as possible and often use candles for our primary lighting.
Yoga has always taught that ahara (food) and proper vihara (lifestyle) are essential in our quest toward radiant health; sustainable living is an element of both. Our actions can help inspire others to “choose and use” wisely and resourcefully.
There are numerous websites to support the global shift to eco-conscious, sustainable living and permaculture, designed to ensure our precious resources are not eroded or depleted over time and that our climate remains hospitable to all life.
May we create the time to consume less and recycle, reuse and restore more in our daily lives. May we consciously tread lightly on the Earth for the benefit of generations to come.
